Writing a student resume

Students often have more relevant experience than they realize. Coursework, internships, research, campus employment, volunteering, athletics, tutoring, and academic projects can all demonstrate practical skills, responsibility, and the ability to contribute in a professional environment.

A strong student resume should focus on evidence of initiative and impact rather than apologizing for limited work experience. Highlight projects you completed, problems you solved, tools you used, teams you supported, and responsibilities you managed. Whenever possible, quantify your contributions using metrics such as project results, GPA, research volume, event attendance, customers served, time saved, performance improvements, or the number of people supported.

Tailor your resume to the opportunity you are pursuing by prioritizing the most relevant academic subjects, technical skills, internships, campus activities, and transferable experience. An engineering student may emphasize design and testing, while a business student may focus on analysis and presentations. Student athletes can demonstrate discipline, leadership, teamwork, and time management through competitive experience.

What to include in your student resume

  • Education: Degree, field of study, institution, expected graduation date, relevant coursework, academic honors, and GPA when it strengthens your application
  • Internships and work experience: Paid roles, internships, campus employment, part-time work, research positions, and volunteer experience
  • Academic and personal projects: Research, software, engineering designs, business analyses, presentations, portfolios, competitions, or collaborative class assignments
  • Technical skills: Software, programming languages, laboratory methods, research tools, analytics platforms, design programs, or industry-specific equipment
  • Transferable skills: Communication, teamwork, leadership, customer service, problem-solving, organization, public speaking, and time management
  • Activities and achievements: Athletics, student organizations, mentoring, tutoring, community involvement, scholarships, awards, and certifications
  • Measurable contributions: Improved processes, completed projects, supported participants, analyzed data, increased attendance, reduced time, or delivered stronger academic or operational results
